Soldering
wo parts need soldering:
1. The ESCs (they don't come with connectors at the extremities)
2. The power distribution board (in our case integrated in the frame)
Here is a schematic of the soldering connections:
For a good quality soldering, use the middle size flat iron tip (provided in your soldering kit) and heat up the solder iron to 400 degC.
Put some soldering wire on the tip of the iron, the material should melt immediately. Clean the tip using the water sponge or the brass wire sponge. Remember, your tip should always look clean and shiny. 😎
Then start by melting some solder on each contact surface on the power distribution board (in our case the bottom stage of the frame). Place the iron tip on the surface and the add the soldering wire. Don't melt to much soldering so it doesn't overflow.
After that, cut about 8cm of red wire and insulate the wire at both extremities using a knife, scissors or a crimping tool. You should see only about 2 or 3mm of wire. Then put a little bit of solder on each extremity all around the wire.
To solder the wire on the distribution board, use the third hand tool (the support) and place your wire on the spot you want it to be solder to it (at a + sign in this case because we have a red wire). Press the wire gently on the distribution board spot at wait until the soldering melts, then add more solder using your soldering wire.
Repeat this for every connection spot on the distribution board and remember to use red wires on the + et black ones on the -.
After that, cut about 2cm of heat-shrinkable sheath and insert it in the wire you just solder.
Take your female connectors and solder each pair of red and black wire to a connector. Don't forget that the connectors have a + and - connection so solder the red wire to the + connection of the connector.
Once you have done that with each wire soldered to your distribution board, you should have something looking like this.
The next step is to solder the male connectors to the ESCs power distribution side's wires.
Again, start by cutting 2cm of heat-shrinkable sheath and insert it around the wires and put a bit of soldering on the wires tip.
Then apply some soldering on the connector before putting your wire on the connector, pressing with the iron until the solder melts and adding a bit more solder before letting it cool up.
The last step before you can disconnect your soldering iron is to solder the gold connectors on the other side of the ESCs. The wires that are connected to the motors.
Again, put some solder on the tips of the wires and on the connectors before pressing each other together with the iron and adding some extra soldering wire to have a good connection. You should do this with all the 3 cables of the 4 ESC and use 12 female 3.5mm gold connectors.
Finally, heat up all the sheaths with a hair dryer. Make sure they are placed on top of the soldering before shrinkening them!
Alright, the soldering is done, we can now carry on to the next step of this tutorial.
